How to Observe
चार दिवसीय कठोर उत्सव: पहला दिन (नहाय खाय) — पवित्र स्नान और एक भोजन; दूसरा दिन (खरना) — दिनभर उपवास, सूर्यास्त बाद खीर-रोटी; तीसरा दिन (सन्ध्या अर्घ्य) — नदी या तालाब में खड़े होकर डूबते सूर्य को ठेकुआ, फल और गन्ने से अर्घ्य; चौथा दिन (उषा अर्घ्य) — उगते सूर्य को अर्घ्य।
Significance
छठ एकमात्र वैदिक उत्सव है जो सूर्य की जीवनदायी शक्ति की उपासना को समर्पित है। यह बिहार, झारखण्ड और पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण त्योहार है।
Fasting
अत्यन्त कठोर — 36 घण्टे बिना भोजन-जल। भक्त सूर्यास्त और सूर्योदय दोनों समय ठण्डे नदी-जल में खड़े रहते हैं।
