भगवान राम ने इस दिन भयंकर युद्ध के बाद दशानन रावण का वध किया और सीता को लंका से मुक्त कराया। एक अन्य परम्परा में, देवी दुर्गा ने इसी दसवें दिन महिषासुर का वध किया।
