Mythology & Legend
When Goddess Parvati's father, Himalaya, arranged her marriage to Lord Vishnu, Parvati was heartbroken as she had vowed to marry only Shiva. Her friend (sakhi) abducted her — "hartalika" means "one who abducts a friend" — and hid her in a dense forest. There Parvati made a Shiva Lingam from sand and earth and performed intense penance. Shiva, pleased by her devotion, appeared and accepted her as his consort.
How to Observe
Women observe a strict nirjala (waterless) fast on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. They make a Shiva-Parvati idol from sand or clay and worship it with flowers, Bel leaves, and fruits during the Madhyahna (midday) period. Night-long jagaran (vigil) is observed with singing and prayers. The idols are immersed the next morning. Unmarried girls observe this for a good husband; married women for marital bliss.
Significance
Hartalika Teej is one of the most important vrats for Hindu women, especially in North India, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. It celebrates Parvati's unwavering devotion to Shiva and the power of a woman's resolve. The vrat is considered extremely powerful for marital happiness and the longevity of one's husband.
Fasting
Strict nirjala (waterless) fast from sunrise to next morning. One of the most rigorous women's vrats in Hindu tradition. Break fast after immersing the sand Shiva-Parvati idols.
