Deity: Lord Shiva
The Somvar Vrat is observed on Mondays in devotion to Lord Shiva. The katha tells the story of a childless couple whose years of Monday fasting pleased Shiva, who granted them a son with a limited lifespan — later extended through divine grace when the family's devotion proved unwavering.
Every Monday. Best observed for 16 consecutive Mondays (Solah Somvar Vrat) for maximum benefit, especially during Shravan month (July-August).
Monday fasting pleases Lord Shiva and grants fulfillment of desires, good health, removal of obstacles in marriage, progeny, and spiritual growth. Sixteen consecutive Mondays is considered particularly powerful.
Wake early, bathe, and visit a Shiva temple. Offer bilva leaves, white flowers, dhatura, milk, and water for abhishek. Light a ghee diya and incense. Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times. Eat one meal after sunset — preferably fruits, milk, or a simple vegetarian meal without salt (in strict observance). Observe for 16 consecutive Mondays for best results. On the final Monday, feed 5 Brahmins and donate white items (rice, cloth, silver).
Somvar Vrat (Monday Fast) is a sacred text that deserves to be read in its traditional form. We recommend consulting your family pandit or a trusted publication for the authentic full text.
