The 16 Shodasvarga charts of Parashara — how one birth chart unfolds into 16 layers of karmic detail
Your Rashi chart (D1) is a map of the sky at birth — but it is only the first layer. Parashara, the father of Vedic astrology, taught that each 30° sign can be further subdivided into smaller arcs. When a planet's sidereal longitude is projected onto these sub-divisions, it lands in a different sign than it occupies in D1. That new sign becomes its position in the divisional chart. These charts are called Vargas (divisions), and together the 16 primary vargas form the Shodasvarga system — the backbone of predictive Jyotish.

Every divisional chart follows a simple principle: divide each 30° sign into N equal parts, then map each part to a sign using classical rules. The formula varies by chart — some use cyclic mapping, others use specific Parashara sequences. But the core idea is always: take a planet's degree within its sign, determine which sub-division it falls in, and look up the corresponding sign.

Of all divisional charts, the Navamsha is supreme. It divides each 30° sign into 9 equal parts of 3°20' each — corresponding to the 9 Padas of a Nakshatra. The Navamsha is so important that no prediction should be made from D1 alone without checking D9. It reveals: (1) the true strength of planets — a planet exalted in D1 but debilitated in D9 will not deliver its full promise; (2) marriage and partnerships — the 7th house of D9 is the primary indicator; (3) the Dharma and spiritual path — D9 is called the "Dharma chart"; (4) the second half of life — while D1 shows the overall pattern, D9 shows how karma unfolds after maturity.

Sun at 118.5° sidereal = Cancer (sign 4) at 28.5°
Cancer is a Water sign → Navamsha starts from Cancer (4)
Navamsha division: 28.5° ÷ 3.333° = 8.55 → 9th navamsha
9th from Cancer = Pisces → Sun is in Pisces in D9

The Navamsha mapping follows the element cycle of the signs. For fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), the 9 navamshas start from Aries. For earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), they start from Capricorn. For air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), they start from Libra. For water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), they start from Cancer.

Parashara designed a scoring system called Vimshopak Bala that weights each varga according to its importance. In the Shodasvarga scheme, the maximum score is 20 points distributed across 16 charts. A planet with Vimshopak Bala above 15 is very strong; below 5 is seriously weakened.
