From Jaimini Sutras and BPHS Chapter 31. Argala reveals which planets actively intervene in each house's affairs — bolting support or obstruction onto your life areas.
The word "Argala" literally means a "bolt" or "latch" — like the bolt on a door. In Jyotish, it refers to the planetary intervention that locks support (or obstruction) onto a specific house. While aspects (Drishti) show where a planet casts its gaze, Argala shows where a planet actively intervenes with resources, emotions, or achievements.
Argala is a concept from both Maharishi Jaimini's Sutras and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS, Ch. 31). Parashara defines four types of Argala based on the position of intervening planets relative to any reference house. The beauty of Argala is its simplicity: count houses, check planets, determine intervention.
BPHS Chapter 31 states: "Planets in the 2nd, 4th, and 11th from any Bhava or Graha cause Argala to that Bhava/Graha." Jaimini Sutras (1.1.5-12) elaborate further, adding the 5th house as a special Argala. Both traditions agree that Argala is a powerful modifying influence — sometimes more impactful than aspects, because it represents active material or emotional intervention rather than mere influence.
Each type of Argala describes a different mechanism of planetary intervention. The intervening planets bring their own nature — benefics bring positive support, malefics bring forceful or challenging intervention. The strength of Argala depends on how many planets occupy the Argala-causing house and their nature.
For each Argala, there exists a Virodha (obstruction) point. If planets occupy the Virodha house, they attempt to block or neutralize the Argala. However — and this is crucial — the obstruction only succeeds if the Virodha planets are MORE in number or strength than the Argala-causing planets. If the Argala planets outnumber the Virodha planets, the Argala holds firm.
This creates a fascinating dynamic: imagine Jupiter and Venus in the 2nd from your 7th house (Dhana Argala on marriage — wealth supports marriage). Now if only Mars is in the 3rd from the 7th (Virodha). Since 2 benefics > 1 malefic, the Argala holds — your marriage receives financial support despite some opposition.
Let us trace Argala for the 7th house — the house of marriage, partnerships, and public dealings.
To analyze Argala for any house, follow these steps: (1) Choose your target house. (2) Count 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 11th from it. (3) Note which planets occupy those houses. (4) Count the Virodha houses (3rd, 10th, 9th, 12th). (5) Compare: if Argala planets >= Virodha planets, the Argala is active.
A "supported" house — one with active, unobstructed Argala — receives tangible planetary help. The life areas of that house flourish with material or emotional backing. An "obstructed" house — where Virodha Argala succeeds — faces counter-intervention, meaning external forces work against that house's significations.
When a critical house (like the 7th for marriage, or the 10th for career) has its Argala obstructed, remedies focus on strengthening the Argala planets while pacifying the Virodha planets. If benefics cause Argala but malefics obstruct, strengthen the benefics through gemstones and mantras. Charity related to the obstructing planet's significations can also help — for example, donating iron items if Saturn obstructs.
Several special rules govern Argala analysis that elevate it beyond simple house-counting:
