Kanakadhara Stotram was composed by Adi Shankaracharya when he was a young student. The story goes that during his daily bhiksha (alms-begging), he visited a very poor woman who had nothing to offer except a single dried amla (gooseberry). Moved by her devotion, Shankaracharya composed this 21-verse hymn to Goddess Lakshmi, whereupon golden gooseberries (kanakadhara = stream of gold) rained upon the woman's home. The stotram is recited on Fridays and during Diwali for the removal of poverty and the bestowal of wealth.
