Deity: Lord Shiva
In a city, there lived a wealthy merchant and his wife who were devoted to Lord Shiva. They observed the Monday fast regularly but had no children. Every Monday, they visited the Shiva temple, offered bilva leaves, performed abhishek with milk and water, and prayed for a child.
Pleased by their years of devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and granted them a boon: they would be blessed with a son, but the child would live only until the age of twelve. The couple was both joyful and heartbroken — they accepted the blessing, trusting in Shiva's grace.
A handsome son was born. When the boy turned eleven, his parents sent him to Kashi (Varanasi) for his sacred thread ceremony (Upanayana), accompanied by his maternal uncle. On the way, they stopped at a city where a grand wedding was being arranged. The groom's party had arrived, but the groom himself was blind in one eye. The bride's father, seeing the merchant's handsome son, secretly asked the uncle to substitute the boy as the groom.
The uncle refused, but the wedding party offered enormous wealth. They agreed. The boy was married to the girl. When the truth was discovered, the bride's father was furious, but Lord Shiva, honoring the boy's parents' devotion, extended the boy's life. On his twelfth birthday, when death was supposed to claim him, Shiva and Parvati appeared and granted him a full lifespan.
The young man, his wife, and both families became lifelong devotees of Shiva, observing Somvar Vrat every Monday for the rest of their lives. Their story spread, and Monday fasting for Shiva became one of the most popular vrats across India.
Monday fasting pleases Lord Shiva and grants: fulfillment of desires, good health, removal of obstacles in marriage, progeny, and spiritual growth. It is especially recommended for those seeking a suitable life partner, facing marital difficulties, or dealing with health issues. Sixteen consecutive Mondays (Solah Somvar) is considered particularly powerful.
Wake early, bathe, and visit a Shiva temple. Offer bilva leaves, white flowers, dhatura, milk, and water for abhishek. Light a ghee diya and incense. Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times. Eat one meal after sunset — preferably fruits, milk, or a simple vegetarian meal without salt (in strict observance). Observe for 16 consecutive Mondays for best results. On the final Monday, feed 5 Brahmins and donate white items (rice, cloth, silver).
