Raksha Bandhan is performed during Aparahna (afternoon) on Shravana Purnima. Bhadra Kaal must be strictly avoided — tying Rakhi during Bhadra brings ill fortune. Check the Panchang for Bhadra timing and avoid it completely.

The sister prepares the aarti plate with a lit diya, roli, akshat, mishri, a flower, and the rakhi. Both brother and sister should bathe and wear clean festive clothes.
The sister performs aarti of her brother by waving the lit diya plate clockwise around his face three times.
The sister applies roli tilak on the brother's forehead with the ring finger, then places akshat (rice grains) on the tilak. This marks him with auspicious blessings.
The sister ties the rakhi on the brother's right wrist while chanting the Raksha Sutra Mantra. The brother keeps his palm open, facing upward. This is the central ritual of Raksha Bandhan.
येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः। तेन त्वामनुबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥
yena baddho balī rājā dānavendro mahābalaḥ | tena tvāmanubadhnāmi rakṣe mā cala mā cala ||
With the same bond by which the mighty demon king Bali was bound, I bind you. O Raksha (protector), do not waver, do not waver!
The sister feeds the brother mishri or sweets, and the brother reciprocates by feeding sweets to the sister. This sweetens the bond.
The brother gives a gift (traditionally money or gold) to the sister and pledges to protect her for life. He touches her feet or head in blessing.
The family shares sweets and celebrates together. Distribute sweets to neighbours and relatives.
Both brother and sister pray together for each other's well-being, long life, and happiness. The sister prays for the brother's protection; the brother prays for the sister's prosperity.
