Understanding retrograde motion — why planets appear to move backward, how it strengthens them in Vedic astrology, and what each retrograde planet means in your birth chart and current transits.
Like a fast car passing a slow car — the slow car APPEARS to go backward. Earth overtakes the outer planet, creating the retrograde illusion.
It is a perspective illusion caused by Earth overtaking a slower outer planet (or an inner planet passing between Earth and Sun). The planet's orbital speed hasn't changed.
In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets gain Cheshta Bala (motional strength). They are physically closer to Earth during retrograde, making their influence MORE powerful, not less.
The Western astrology panic about retrograde Mercury causing disasters misunderstands the Vedic view. In Jyotish, retrograde intensifies and internalizes a planet's energy — it doesn't destroy it.
| Planet | Frequency | Duration | Vedic View |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 3-4x per year | ~21 days | Communication internalized, deep processing |
| Venus | Every 18 months | ~40 days | Relationship re-evaluation, inner beauty focus |
| Mars | Every 26 months | ~72 days | Action stalled then redirected, strategy over force |
| Jupiter | 4 months/year | ~120 days | Inner wisdom deepening, unconventional guru |
| Saturn | 4.5 months/year | ~138 days | Karmic review intensified, past debts surface |
| Rahu / Ketu | Always retrograde | Permanent | Their natural state — retrograde IS their default motion |
Planets retrograde at the time of your birth add a deep, internalized dimension to your personality:
When a planet goes retrograde in current transit — practical do's and don'ts:
When a planet's daily longitude change (speed) becomes negative, it is retrograde. This is computed from ephemeris calculations every 24 hours.
Retrograde planets receive maximum motional strength — 60 Shashtiamsas (full score). This makes them among the strongest planets in the Shadbala system.
Just before going retrograde or turning direct, a planet becomes "stationary" (near-zero speed). Stationary planets are extremely powerful — they "stop" and concentrate all energy on the degree they occupy.
