A sign-based astrological system from Maharishi Jaimini. Where Parashari focuses on planets, Jaimini focuses on signs — making it uniquely powerful for timing events and understanding soul purpose.
Jaimini astrology is an alternative system to the more widely-known Parashari system. Named after Maharishi Jaimini — a disciple of Maharishi Vyasa — it is based on the Jaimini Sutras (Upadesha Sutras), one of the most cryptic yet profound texts in Vedic astrology. While Parashari asks "What is this planet doing?", Jaimini asks "What role does this sign play?" — shifting the analytical lens from individual planets to the signs they occupy.
The fundamental difference: in Parashari, if Mars is in the 7th house, you analyze Mars (its dignity, aspects, lordships). In Jaimini, you analyze the SIGN in the 7th house — its lord, the Chara Karaka placed there, the sign aspects it receives, and its Arudha Pada. This sign-centric approach often reveals patterns that planet-centric analysis misses.
The most revolutionary concept in Jaimini. Unlike Parashari's fixed Karakas (Sun always = father, Moon always = mother), Jaimini assigns Karakas DYNAMICALLY based on the degree each planet has achieved in its sign. The planet at the highest degree becomes the Atmakaraka (soul significator), and so on down to the lowest degree becoming the Darakaraka (spouse significator). This means every chart has a unique Karaka assignment.
Only the 7 visible planets participate in Chara Karaka assignment (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Rahu is sometimes used as the 8th Karaka by some schools. The degrees used are within the sign (0-30°), NOT total zodiacal degrees.
The Karakamsha is the Navamsha sign occupied by the Atmakaraka — and it is the single most important reference point in Jaimini astrology. It reveals the soul's deepest purpose and spiritual direction. Planets placed in or aspecting the Karakamsha show what drives the soul in this lifetime.
For example: if the Atmakaraka is Jupiter and it sits in Sagittarius Navamsha, the Karakamsha is Sagittarius — indicating a soul drawn to teaching, philosophy, dharma, and higher learning. If Venus aspects this Karakamsha, the person may pursue these through art or beauty. If Saturn aspects, they pursue it through discipline and service.
Jaimini replaces planetary aspects with sign-based aspects (Rashi Drishti). Instead of individual planets casting aspects, entire signs aspect other signs. All planets in an aspecting sign collectively influence all planets in the aspected sign. This simplifies analysis while capturing group dynamics.
Arudha Padas are Jaimini's tool for understanding how the WORLD perceives each life area — as opposed to the REALITY of that life area shown by the house itself. The Arudha Pada of a house is calculated by counting from the house to its lord, then counting the same distance from the lord forward.
The most important Arudha is Arudha Lagna (AL) — the Arudha of the 1st house. AL shows your public image, how society perceives you. A strong AL with benefics means good reputation even if the actual Lagna is afflicted. Conversely, an afflicted AL can damage reputation even if the person is genuinely good (weak 1st house but strong character). The gap between Lagna and AL reveals the gap between reality and perception.
While Parashari uses the Vimshottari Dasha (planet-based timing), Jaimini uses the Chara Dasha (sign-based timing). Each sign gets a period of 1-12 years during which the affairs of that sign (and all planets in it) become activated. Chara Dasha is calculated from the Lagna sign, alternating between direct and reverse zodiacal order depending on whether the Lagna is an odd or even sign.
The Chara Dasha period for each sign is determined by the distance from the sign to its lord. For odd signs, count forward; for even signs, count backward. The maximum period is 12 years, minimum is 1 year. During a sign's Chara Dasha, events related to that sign's natural significations, its occupying planets, and its lord manifest strongly.

Always identify the Atmakaraka FIRST. Everything else in Jaimini revolves around it. Check its Navamsha sign (Karakamsha) immediately after.
Use Jaimini Chara Dasha alongside Vimshottari. When both systems agree on an event timing, confidence is very high. When they disagree, the event may be weaker than expected.
For marriage prediction, combine the Darakaraka (DK) analysis with the 7th house Arudha Pada (A7). DK shows the spouse's nature; A7 shows how society perceives the marriage.
Rashi Drishti is particularly powerful for transit analysis. When a transiting planet enters a sign that aspects your natal Karakamsha, significant soul-level events occur.
